Conventional understanding: the science of acupuncture

  • Piezoelectricity

Stimulation of an acupuncture point causes a local increase of electrical conductivity. The fascia of the body is much like a living electrical web, and the collagen in fascia is a like a semiconductor that may help generate and direct body electricity.

  • Circulation and reduced inflammation

Studies have shown that acupuncture can help improve blood flow and circulation while reducing inflammatory markers.

  • Observable changes

MRI studies have shown observable changes in the brain, so there is some immediate feedback from the peripheral nervous system to the central nervous system.

Ancient understanding: the energy of acupuncture

  • Regulation of qi

From the ancient practice of Chinese Medicine, acupuncture regulates qi, or energy, through the use of needles or moxa applied to specific points on the body. Health is achieved when balance is restored, and the way to balance is through the even and smooth flow of qi throughout the organs and meridians.

  • Macrocosm and microcosm

As one of the oldest forms of healing, points are selected based on an individual’s entire constitution as well as specific symptoms. Acupuncture is always an individualized and in the moment treatment.

  • Movement as medicine

There are various ways to move qi including acupuncture needles, non-insertive tools, bodywork, cupping, moxibustion, and gua sha.

These are applied anywhere along the 12 meridians and more than 365 acupuncture points.

Modalities and FAQ

  • The needles are very small and generally have a slight prick sensation that quickly subsides. Some points you won’t feel at all and some will have more sensation. If pain or muscle tightness is being addressed, those points will be the most active, but it’s my goal to keep you as comfortable as possible. As a whole, acupuncture is very relaxing and leaves people feeling grounded and refreshed.

  • Acupuncture is part of a holistic medical system. Anyone with any condition is welcome to my practice. It’s not a magic cure, but acupuncture can often help alleviate symptoms associated with complex medical conditions and helps bring the body closer to a state of balance. Some of the most common conditions treated with acupuncture include pain, stress, anxiety, depression, low energy, and insomnia. Acupuncture also helps with nervous system regulation which can beneficially impact the immune and endocrine systems.

  • I’m trained in a style of acupuncture that utilizes non-insertive metal tools as well as cupping, moxibustion, and bodywork that can be integrated into an effective, needle-free treatment.

  • Naturopathic medicine is at the core of my training, but due to state regulations, it is not yet recognized in Tennessee. While I am unable to serve as your physician, I can still serve as your health and wellness advocate and teach the foundations of health. I believe that every individual is entitled to health autonomy and that begins with education. Naturopathic medicine implies the completion of a four-year doctoral degree with national board certification. Naturopathy does not. The terms are often used interchangeably, so it’s best to confirm an individual’s level of training.

The Six Principles of Naturopathic Medicine:
